What is computer based testing?
The BEC examination is now available as a computer based test.
Computer-based tests offer exactly the same qualification as the paper-based tests. The test format and the certificate are just the same. Like many students around the world, you are probably used to working on a computer and may prefer to answer the test questions using a keyboard and mouse rather than a pen and paper.
What is cb BEC?
Cb BEC follows the same format as the paper-based version. Computer- based tests use standard web navigation that is clear and easy to understand. There is a quick tutorial at the beginning so you can find your way around before starting the exam.
The Reading, Writing and Listening parts are taken on screen. The Speaking test takes place face-to-face with an examiner, as with the paper-based version, so that you can demonstrate real communication skills.
Advantages of computer-based testing
Our research shows that many candidates would prefer to take the tests on a computer for the following reasons:
- easier to make changes to your answers during the test
- easier to change the order in which you answer the questions
- you can register for the Cb-BEC exam much later than the paper based BEC
Other Advantages
- Additional exam sessions
- Exam registration up to 2 weeks before the exam
- Faster turn-around of results
- Technology that is familiar to students
- On-screen scrolling and editing
- Online timer and help function

How does it work?
The test takes place in a room arranged by your exam centre. You sit at your own computer and the test appears on the screen. You can work through the test at your own speed and you navigate easily through the questions. The system is easy to use and everything is explained to you clearly on the screen.
You have your own headphones to hear the Listening part of the exam. When you have finished the test, your answers are sent back to Cambridge ESOL using secure web communication.
Results Online
The results of your test will normally be available in three to four weeks, and you can pre-register with Cambridge ESOL Results Online so that you can get your results the moment they are released. To get your results, you go to www.CambridgeESOL-results.org |
